JPG, PNG, and WebP: when to use each format

JPG is commonly suited to photographs and supports adjustable lossy compression, but it cannot preserve transparency. PNG works well for graphics, screenshots, and transparent backgrounds, although files are often larger. WebP combines efficient compression with transparency support and is frequently a useful option for the web.

Changing formats does not recover lost detail or automatically improve quality. Converting JPG to PNG, for example, avoids another lossy save but cannot rebuild information already discarded by the original JPG compression.

Compression, dimensions, and transparency

Reducing file size may require lowering quality, reducing dimensions, or changing formats. JPG and WebP support quality adjustment, while Canvas provides no equivalent control for PNG; a PNG may therefore shrink very little or even produce a larger result. WebP can be useful for web delivery when the content allows it.

PNG and WebP can preserve transparent pixels. JPG always needs an opaque background, so converting a transparent image to JPG requires applying a background color.
